What is Dyslexia?

What exactly is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is known as being a language based learning disability. Students who are Dyslexic often experience difficulties with language skills, specifically in reading. It is common that a student who is Dyslexic, may also have difficulties with spelling, writing, and pronunciation. Dyslexia is in fact, referred to as a learning disability, because it can make it extremely difficult for a child to succeed in an educational setting. In addition to difficulties in the instructional environment, student's who are Dyslexic often have some form of difficulties socially; such as communicating with peers, or understanding figures of speech. If the Dyslexia is severe, a student can be referred for special education.

Evidence proves that the Dyslexic brain develops and functions differently than the average person.  It is a brain based disability that affects, reading, spelling and writing, but tends to have no effect on vision. Dyslexia has NOTHING to do with intelligence. Dyslexia varies in severity so identifying symptoms in children can be tricky. When looking for signs and symptoms in students, look for students skills with phonemic awareness and decoding. Often times, if  a student absolutely despises reading out loud, because they are "slow at it,"  this can be an indication that they could be Dyslexic.

"The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) define the rights of students with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities. These individuals are legally entitled to special services to help them overcome and accommodate their learning problems. Such services include education programs designed to meet the needs of these students. The Acts also protect people with dyslexia against unfair and illegal discrimination. (Dyslexia Basics)."
