Using Assistive Technology to Support Learning

It is extremely important that students with disabilities have full access to assistive technology inside and outside of the classroom. Choosing the right assistive technology for a student is crucial to the development and progress that the student will make. When choosing the type of assistive technology for a student, it is imperative that it is a collaborative process. Including teachers, parents, therapists, etc. gives everyone the opportunity to discuss what it best for the child's needs. This is typically referred to as the child's IEP team. Often times, when picking a tool that will work for the child, it is important to involve them in the decision as well, to ensure the tool will be effective for the student.  As a teacher, do not be alarmed if the assistive technology that is first assigned to the student does not help. There are numerous forms of assistive technology that are available for the student. Sometimes finding the right assistive technology can be a guessing game! Just be sure to gather as much information about the student as possible, and then begin to research what is available. Once the student finds the assistive technology that is most helpful, confidence and academic achievement will begin to improve!

Remember: There are 17 different categories that a student can qualify under that would require help from assistive technology! Keeping these categories in mind can be very helpful when considering different options of assistive technology for students.
