How to Incorporate Assistive Technology into the Classroom

Under IDEA, otherwise known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, it requires that IEP teams consider assistive technology as an option for accommodation for students with Dyslexia. The IEP team should meet to determine the best technology tools/devices for the needs of the student.

Teachers should work together to incorporate assistive technology in the classroom, not only for students with disabilities or impairments, but also for the benefit of all students. Some simple ways to incorporate technology could include using a SMART board, or allowing the students to use iPads. In addition, doing activities where all students use technology, this will help to make students with disabilities feel more included with the class and their peers.
Although assistive technology is specifically designed for students with disabilities or impairments, incorporating aspects of technology into lessons will benefit all students. Providing students with the opportunity to explore in their learning, with different technology tools, allows for more engagement, and a higher quality, more in-depth, type of learning.
